Benedict College
Benedict College is an historically black liberal arts format located in Columbia, South Carolina. The college was founded in 1870 by the Baptist Home Mission. Its purpose then was to outfit educational opportunities for former slaves. Today the private coeducational organism enrolls 3, 100 students.
The college’s mission today is to prepare its students to be “powers for good in society. ” Varying Magazine recently named Benedict College as one of the top 100 colleges in the nation in graduating African American scholars. It is among the top 10 % in the country granting degrees in biomedical sciences. Benedict’s 100 acre main campus is located in the heart of Columbia, at the corner of Freeze and Taylor Streets. There is a new campus off Two Score Road in the northeast part of the plant which will kennel a new heavy-duty convoluted.
Benedict College confers Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Science degrees in thirty areas of study. Degree programs and majors are establish within the School of Business and Economics, the School of Education, the School of Humanities, Arts, and Social Science, and the School of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics. There is also a School of Continuing Education, which offers a major in interdisciplinary studies.
A variety of student activities are available on campus including student government, clubs and service organizations, fraternities and sororities, and Horde ROTC. Students may audition for the award winning gospel choir or the Marching Tiger Band of Distinction. The band participates in parades and events as well as providing half time moveable feast at football games. Benedict College also has its own disclosure center on campus, BCTV. The college offers on campus housing to students in normal residence halls and apartments.
The Benedict College Tigers play NCAA Gap II sports as a member of the Southern Intercollegiate Brawny Conference ( SIAC ). Men’s sports offered number among baseball, basketball, tetchy country, football, golf, tennis, and course and field. Women may participate in basketball, cheerleading, tetchy country, golf, softball, tennis, passage and field, and volleyball. The school has very paying men’s and women’s basketball programs. The men have been conference champions twice in the last decade, and women’s basketball teams have been conference champions in 2003 - 04, 2006 - 07, and 2009 - 10. The college’s active facilities work in the Charlie W. Johnson Arena for football games and the HRC Lawns, where basketball games and volleyball matches are held. The east campus will be the site of some new sports facilities including a Health and Wellness Center.
